Weighted Poncho (2018)

The handmade poncho weighs 6 kilograms. When worn, it drastically heighten's the users Proprioceptive Sense. Sometimes referred to as the 'Sixth Sense', Proprioception is the awareness we have of how our body moves, and where each of our body parts are. As the heaviness of this item gives proprioceptive input,  many people's brains will release neurotransmitters such as Serotonin and Dopamine. This results in a calming effect.
Weighted blankets and clothing are commonly used for anxiety, stress, and autism. Here, the gallery exhibition and impracticality of the item, offers a chance for any person to take time out of their routine, and simply be present in their body.
