The Aural Looms Project
The Aural Looms Project is a contemporary interpretation of the sound of looms researched in archival material. Making reference to the historic machine's mechanics, the sculptures work like Victorian music boxes, with handmade percussive instruments and curtains of laser-cut objects playing out a systematic composition.
With the ability to be played individually as well as in unison, the sculptures encourage social interaction and give the audience control over how the piece is heard. The Aural Looms Project will takes its interpretation to three historically relevant sites, with the Silk Museum, Queen Street Mill and Quarry Bank Mill throughout 2014 & 15.
Our unending thanks goes to Jonjo Nally, Nicola Ellis and The North West Sound Archive, without whom this work wouldn't have been possible.
